ABOUT OUR HALL

AGM &
Reports

We recently had our Annual General Meeting, why not find out what went on in the link below

Built in 1872 to serve as the village school, it provided education for generations of children, some of whom still live in the village.

In 1980, it ceased being used as a village school and very nearly found itself being demolished.  Local residents, were opposed to any such scheme and in 1984 the Parish Council leased the building and the land in front of the property to the newly formed Shiptonthorpe Village Hall Charity for a period of forty years, who pay a peppercorn rent per year.

It is being held on trust for the purposes of a village hall, for the use of its inhabitants for meetings, lectures and classes and for other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants.

At the present time there are seven trustees who are all members of the management committee, which is made up of parish councillors and co-opted members. They give their time and commitment for free and are tasked with managing the hall on behalf of the community, ensuring the Charity complies with its governing document and any conditions set by legislation and the Charity Commission.

The Charity is totally reliant upon donations and any monies raised through the hiring of the hall and of course from the variety of events it promotes throughout the year. Without support from the local community, the Charity could not continue to maintain the hall and it is possible it would not continue to exist.

Major refurbishment of the hall was undertaken in 2009 and in recent years the management committee has been able to secure various grants which has resulted in the construction of a new toilet block which includes disabled toilet facilities; the surfacing of the car park and most recently the provision of a sizable patio to support outdoor events.

The hall has a packed calendar of both weekly and monthly events and the management committee are always seeking new ideas for events that it could promote on behalf of the community.

As ever, the management committee is grateful to all those who not only support our functions, but who also contribute by donating equipment and hardware to assist in the delivery of our organised events and also those who volunteer and give their time freely to install such equipment or assist in preparing the hall, bar or other outside areas for such use.

If you have any free time or wish to become involved in the work of the Charity please speak to any committee members, who will be pleased to assist.
